ICD-10-CM Code Updates, Effective 4.1.2024, FY 2024

Skilled Nursing Code Cases​

Cases in this advanced* ICD-10-CM training course are new material and will include a mix of injuries, post-op complications, infections, and clinically complex cases.  Attendees are fully engaged reviewing skilled nursing code cases 

  • Identify the primary diagnosis.

  • Locate the default clinical category on the CMS Mapping Tool.

  • Review section J of the MDS for a change in default clinical category as applicable.

  • To ensure optimal reimbursement, section I8000 will be reviewed to identify NTA and speech comorbidity opportunities.

The week of the course date, attendees will have access to the course worksheet.  Step by step education is provided on the correct ICD-10-CM code assignment, starting with the alphabetical index, followed with the tabular.   

* Advanced meaning the attendee has a proficient understanding of The Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

ICD-10-CM Fracture Coding Certificate

This course provides in-depth knowledge of fracture classification concepts from The Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.  Diseases and disorders related to the musculoskeletal system, such as osteoporosis, pathologic, and fatigue fractures, will be reviewed during this course a well as chapter-specific guidelines pertaining to orthopedics. 

 

At the end of the session, attendees will

  • Understand how to apply to apply chapter 19 coding concepts - the primary axis for classifying injuries is the anatomical site.  The secondary axis is the type of injury.

  • Identify certain fractures as open vs closed or displaced vs nondisplaced.

  • Learn how to code a traumatic fracture type not listed as a subindex.

  • Learn how to code a traumatic fracture that has multiple subindex entries.

  • How to code fractures described by terms such as “comminuted”, “depressed,” “elevated,” “greenstick,” “spiral,” “simple,” and “transverse.

  • How joint fractures from chapter 13 are coded.

  • How to code periprosthetic, fragility, stress, and compound fractures.

  • Understand how body plane descriptions are applied to the Index. 

  • Learn which medical reports provide the highest degree of specificity for fracture coding.

 

The utilization of an Encoder will demonstrate a step-by-step review of the correct ICD-10-CM code assignment, starting with the Alphabetical Index and review of Tabular Notes.  Opportunities for a change in the default clinical category will be identified using section J of the MDS.  Section I8000 will be reviewed to ensure optimal reimbursement to determine NTA and speech comorbidities.  Training Guides will be provided to attendees.

ICD10 Coding Fundamentals for SNFs Certificate

A proficient understanding of ICD-10-CM is critical to maximizing reimbursement under the Patient-Driven Payment Module (PDPM).  Accurate ICD-10-CM coding starts with a thorough understanding of the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. This course is designed for those unfamiliar with or needing a fresher of The Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
